Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II of England and His Royal Higness Prince Phillip, Duke of Edinburg, visited Adamjee Jute Mills, during their state visit to East Pakistn in 1961

Brief History

The founding father of the Adamjee Group was Adamjee Haji Dawood who was born in 1880 in Jetpur, India. Initially, trade was limited to the rice business but later diversified into jute operations. In 1922, he established the largest match factory in Asia in Rangoon, Burma. Thereafter he set up a rice mill in Rangoon & a jute mill in Calcutta. The British Government knighted Adamjee Haji Dawood in 1933 for his work as a keen philanthropist & for financing a number of educational institutions.

In less than three decades, the Adamjee Group ran over thirty industries and

enterprises. With the creation of Bangladesh in 1971, the group lost

Adamjee Jute Mills, the largest Jute Mill of its kind in the world. A host of

other businesses were also taken over by the Government of Bangladesh including

Sugar, Tea, Textiles, and Cooking Oil. Later,Muslim Commercial Bank and

Adamjee Life Insurance were both nationalized by the Government of Pakistan

in 1974.

Despite all these set backs, the ideas of Sir Adamjee Haji Dawood still

continue to be followed by the family which has split up into five

groups and diversified its business into various sectors. Some of the

enterprises of the Hanif Adamjee Group of companies are:

1. Adamjee Corporation (Pvt.) Ltd.
2. Adamjee Engineering (Pvt.) Ltd.

3. Adamjee Pharmaceuticals (Pvt.) Ltd.

4. Chempro Pakistan (Pvt.) Ltd.
5. Coastal Enterprises (Pvt.) Ltd.

Mr. Hanif Adamjee holds the position of the Chairman of all the above companies.
